Flying Hibernating Pests Control in Northern Illinois

All of the pests listed below leave feeding areas and begin to land on sunny homes, for warmth, after the first cold snap, usually in September. As each evening wears on, and the homes siding becomes cool they move into cracks and crevices, and huddle together for warmth. Each warm day, much to your frustration, many, (but not all), of the pests come back out to bask in the sunlight, and then go back inside at night, where they eventually will hibernate during Winter. In Spring they become as much of a problem getting into doors and windows, as they were in Autumn, because they fly in and out for perhaps a month, as they are reluctant to leave the warmth of their resting place.

Boxelder Bugs

Boxelder bugs are a common nuisance pest in Northern Illinois, especially during the fall as temperatures begin to drop. These insects congregate on the sunny sides of homes and buildings, particularly those near boxelder, maple, or ash trees, before finding their way inside through small cracks, gaps, and utility penetrations. While boxelder bugs do not reproduce indoors or cause structural damage, their sheer numbers can quickly become overwhelming.

Once inside, boxelder bugs often emerge on warm winter days, clustering near windows and light sources. Crushing them can result in staining due to the pigments in their bodies, making proper exclusion and exterior treatments the most effective long-term solution. Managing boxelder bugs requires a focus on sealing entry points and treating exterior harborage areas before they gain access to the structure.

Stink Bugs

Stink bugs, particularly the brown marmorated stink bug, have become increasingly common in homes and businesses throughout Illinois. These insects seek shelter indoors during the fall to escape colder weather, often entering through siding gaps, soffits, attic vents, and window frames. Once inside, they become active during warm spells and are frequently found on walls, ceilings, and near windows.

Although stink bugs do not bite or damage property, they emit a strong odor when disturbed or crushed, making them especially unpleasant indoors. Because they do not nest or reproduce inside structures, interior treatments alone are ineffective. Proper stink bug control focuses on exterior perimeter treatments, sealing entry points, and reducing overwintering access before populations build up inside the building.

Asian Beetles

These are NOT the harmless Lady beetle, we all know and love. Asian Beetles can deliver a painful “pinch” . So, If they land on you or an infant, brush them off immediately. Asian lady beetles are often mistaken for native ladybugs, but they behave very differently when it comes to structures. In the fall, they gather in large numbers on light-colored or sunlit exteriors before entering wall voids, attics, and living spaces to overwinter. Homes with southern or western exposure are particularly vulnerable.

Once indoors, Asian lady beetles can become active during winter warm-ups, often appearing suddenly in living areas. They can bite if handled and may leave yellow staining or odor when crushed. Because these beetles overwinter inside wall voids, successful control relies heavily on exterior exclusion work and targeted perimeter treatments rather than reactive indoor spraying.

FAQs

Why do they like MY home?
They prefer basking on they sunny sides of homes that have a “just right” temperature. There will also be a feeding area in close proximity to your home.

Do they do any damage?
Stains and Permanent odors that pests leave may lower a homes value, and harm air quality.

How can I control them?
INSIDE: Simply use your vacuum hose, instead of pesticides. OUTSIDE: Soap and water will kill every one you hit, but expect to be spraying every day for about a month, to reduce the population very little. Caulking, on the other hand works.
– Caulk windows inside and out.
– Weather strip entry doors and/or install door sweeps,
– Close crawl space entry vents just before winter,
– Caulk gas lines, air conditioning lines around the foundation.
