Decontamination and Insulation services in Chicagoland

Mouse cleanup

Once the home and basement have been thoroughly mouse-proofed,  the cleanup and decontamination process can begin. Any insulation that has been soiled by mouse activity is carefully removed and disposed of. Loose droppings and contaminated debris are then removed using HEPA-filtered vacuum equipment designed to capture fine particles and prevent airborne spread.

Fox Valley Environmental Pest Control provides rodent cleanup and insulation services for homes throughout Kane County, DuPage County, and surrounding Fox Valley communities.

After physical removal, the rim-joist and affected basement areas are disinfected and deodorized using professional-grade fogging treatments. This step helps neutralize bacteria, reduces lingering odors associated with rodent activity, and prepares the space for proper re-insulation. All cleanup work is performed in a controlled manner to minimize disruption to the home while restoring the area to a clean, sanitary condition

Basement Insulation and air-sealing

Finally, the basement will be reinsulated. For many homes, FVEPC recommends installing spray foam insulation due to its strong air-sealing properties and higher R-value per inch compared to traditional insulation materials.

Bats of insulation, such as fiberglass, are often not properly air-sealed before installation and can be easily disturbed or inhabited by mice once entry points exist. Many older homes in Kane and DuPage counties will have insulation that has degraded significantly over the decades, if it’s still installed at all. When combined with a thorough mouse-proofing job by FVEPC, your new insulation will provide you a cleaner, less drafty, and better weather-proofed home. This service is especially recommended for homeowners planning to finish their basement, as proper sealing and insulation are critical before walls and ceilings are enclosed.

Depending on the situation, FVEPC does offer re-insulation using materials like fiberglass or mineral wool, sometimes in combination with spray-foam. To help maintain the integrity of the insulation and confirm that mice are not re-entering the home, annual inspections of the mouse-proofing and insulation work are recommended.

Attic Re-Insulation after Rodent Damage

Rodents will frequently damage attic insulation, significantly reducing its effectiveness and creating lingering odor and contamination issues. In many cases, replacing or upgrading insulation after a rodent cleanup can significantly improve comfort, energy efficiency, and indoor air quality.

Attic insulation services are available as part of a complete rodent damage restoration approach. Insulation pricing varies based on an attic size, access, insulation type, and overall condition. General pricing guidance can be provided during the evaluation process.

All attic insulation work is performed by qualified insulation professionals.

FAQs

Will Spray foam on its own seal mice out?

No. While spray foam is much harder to chew through than fiberglass, mice can still get through it. FVEPC will fill and reinforce suspected entry points with copper and other materials that mice cannot chew through before insulation installation.

Do you offer mouse-proofing and insulation services in Kane and DuPage counties?

Yes, FVEPC provides mouse-proofing, rodent cleanup, and basement insulation services throughout Kane County, DuPage County and nearby Fox Valley communities in the Chicagoland area

Do I have to worry about the spray foam off gassing?

Only for a short time. Application of this material requires PPE, but generally speaking within a few hours the area will become safe to enter. The exact time will depend on factors including how much was installed and ventilation. FVEPC uses closed cell spray foam products, which off gas for a shorter period than open cell foam, which is most commonly used in new construction.

Is professional mouse droppings cleanup necessary?

In many cases, yes. Improper removal can spread contamination and odors, especially in enclosed basement areas. Professional Cleanup focuses on controlled removal, disinfection, and preparation for re-insulation.

Can mouse droppings affect indoor air quality?

Yes. Mouse droppings, urine, nesting materials, and contaminated insulation can release allergen particles and dust into the air, especially in attics, crawlspaces, and wall voids connected to a home’s airflow. These particles may contribute to poor indoor air quality and respiratory irritation over time

Why is crawlspace insulation often heavily contaminated?

Rodents frequently travel, nest, and tunnel through crawlspace insulation because it provides warmth and protection. Over time, droppings, urine, and nesting debris can accumulate throughout the insulation. We also find that entry points are almost always along the rim-joist where utilities enter the home

Is it safe to vacuum mouse droppings?

Standard household vacuums should generally not be used on large amounts of mouse droppings because they can stir allergen particles into the air. Professional cleanup often used HEPA-filtered vacuum equipment designed to reduce airborne particle spread

Does removing the mice eliminate the contamination problem?

No. Even after the rodents themselves are killed or removed, droppings, urine residue, contaminated insulation, and allergen particles may remain behind in crawlspaces, attics, and wall voids. Severe infestations often require cleanup and insulation removal in addition to rodent control

Can mice allergens spread through HVAC systems?

In some homes, allergen particles from mouse droppings and nesting material can circulate through ductwork and air movement between crawlspaces, attics, basements, and living areas. This is especially common in homes with long-term infestations and contamination insulation
