You might be used to squeaking mice, whirling wasps, and lawn-destroying moles. However, many homeowners have never seen or experienced wood-destroying insects before. These pests often remain hidden while causing serious damage behind walls, floors, and structural wood.
Since 1990, Fox Valley Environmental Pest Control has provided termite inspections and treatments throughout Northern Illinois using proven products like Termidor, applied by university-trained technicians who understand proper placement and long-term colony control. Not all termite treatments are the same. Effective control depends on proper product selection, application, and placement — not just surface treatment.

Be on the Lookout for These Wood-Destroying Insects

Termites
Most homeowners have heard of termites—and for good reason. These insects cause billions of dollars in structural damage each year and can severely weaken a home if left untreated. Termites feed silently and remain hidden, often causing damage long before they are discovered. A single termite colony can forage over a wide area (up to 5 acres!), meaning that infestations in one home may indicate activity nearby.
Termites are often mistaken for ants, but they have wings that are equal in length and longer than their body, along with a uniform body shape. Common warning signs include discarded wings near windows or doors, hollow-sounding wood, sagging floors, and subtle tapping or rustling noises inside walls or floors.
Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants become a problem when moisture issues exist within or around a structure. They do not eat wood, but they excavate it to build nests, which can lead to structural damage over time. Colonies can be extensive, and satellite nests are common, especially in homes with water leaks or damp wood.
Carpenter ants vary in size and you may see winged carpenter ants. Winged ants are called “swarmers”, and only happen when a colony is at least 3-5 years old. Their presence often indicates an underlying moisture issue that should be addressed alongside professional pest control.
Powder Post Beetles
Powder post beetles are particularly destructive because their larvae live inside wood, sometimes for many years, feeding unnoticed. Damage can continue long after the beetles are first introduced, making infestations difficult to detect early.
The most common sign of powder post beetles is small, round exit holes in exposed wood, often accompanied by fine, powder-like dust. These pests are frequently found in basements, crawl spaces, and unfinished structural wood. They are generally only present when moisture conditions are very high, such as in a damp crawl space with inadequate ventilation.
Carpenter Bees
Carpenter bees damage wood by tunneling into it to create nesting galleries. They are commonly found around decks, porches, fascia boards, eaves, and other exposed wood surfaces. Over time, repeated nesting can weaken wood and cause visible damage. These are solitary insects that are generally not aggressive, but they can sting if they are directly threatened. You might see high numbers of them in the late spring, which is when their drilling and nest construction is at its highest.
A key sign of carpenter bee activity is a smooth, round entrance hole about ½ inch in diameter, often with sawdust below the opening.
